He finished his thesis titled Tokatlı Kani: Sanat, şahsiyet ve psikoloji under supervision of Nihat Tarlan. He graduated in Turkish language and literature from İstanbul University. Atılgan finished middle school in Manisa, then high school in Balıkesir.
